LAWRENCE, Kan. (KCTV) – Kansas guard Johnny Furphy could be headed to Paris this summer.
On Wednesday, the Australian National Team’s 22-man initial roster for the 2024 Summer Olympics was revealed. Furphy, a native of Melbourne, Australia, who just finished his freshman season at Kansas, was among the 22-man list that will participate in a final training camp this July.
That training camp will provide an opportunity to shorten the roster to a final 12 ahead of the Paris 2024 games.
Furphy arrived at KU late last summer from the Centre of Excellence in Australia. He averaged 9.0 points and 4.9 rebounds per game as a freshman, starting 19 of the 33 games he participated in for KU.
The 6-foot-9 guard was named to a Big 12 All-Freshman team selection and is on mock draft boards with a chance to be a first-round pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. It’s still unclear whether those mock draft projections will lead Furphy to leave Kansas or if he’ll return for a sophomore season.
The 22-man training camp roster for the Boomers includes Dallas Mavericks guards Dante Exum and Josh Green, Oklahoma City Thunder guard Josh Giddey, Portland Trail Blazers guard Matisse Thybulle and several other NBA players.
If healthy, former Kansas center and Cameroon native Joel Embiid said he intends to play for Team USA in the 2024 Olympics. Embiid became an American citizen in September of 2022.
