Rich Lister Sarina Russo roasted after telling Aussies to ‘get a job

Aussie rich lister Sarina Russo has attracted attention online after posting a motivational video urging Australians to “get a job”.

Ms Russo, who owns an extensive property empire across NSW, Queensland and Victoria, ranked 59th on Australia’s 2024 Rich Women list with an estimated net worth of $271 million.

She purchased her first property for $40,000 and believes it to be now worth around $1.3 million.

Her business, Sarina Russo Entrepreneurs provides government-funded entrepreneurship programs to create self-employment opportunities and has been running for over 44 years.

A report from Michael West Media claimed she has been one of the “biggest winners of the privatised employment services scheme brought in under Tony Abbott’s government, having been awarded over $600 million since 2015”.

In her video posted on Monday, Ms Russo stressed the importance of relying on yourself to achieve financial independence.

“Today I thought I would emphasise how important it is to have a job,” she said. “You know, I’ve been thinking about this. I’ve been an ambassador for being the ‘Job Queen’ for Australia and global for something like 45 years.

“I just want to emphasise that if you have a job, you have dignity.

“You have a job, you have more respect and positive self esteem.

“If you have a job, you become financially (in)dependent and absolutely empowered. You can become more, enjoy more, have more and see more.

“So today, I’m going to say to you and say to myself … let’s get a job, let’s get excited, let’s get that passion growing and I’ll see you at the top. Ciao for now.”

Given the state of advancement in artificial intelligence and the undeniable reality it poses to the entry level job market, Ms Russo’s advice may be a little harder to implement as years go by.

Some social media users weren’t too impressed by the broad strokes advice from the multi-millionaire, with one claiming it was “arrogance personified”.

“Yes watch Sarina, dressed in designer funk wear, as she meanders through the extravagant but ultimately aimless alleyways of the wealthy yet pointless. With each step, she peels off essential life lessons, like “I’m the jobs Queen; Get a job!” Classic,” one person wrote on Twitter.

“Standing outside the Westin Hotel telling people to get a job as if nobody’s thought of it. Last day of the comedy festival – no stars,” another wrote under her Instagram video.

Ms Russo attracted controversy two years ago after posting a video of herself telling victims of the devastating Queensland floods that “it’s the time to exercise”.

Ms Russo told the victims “fitness is everything” and to “just do it”.

“We’re here overlooking the most beautiful city called Brisbane and sadly last week we had massive floods – once in a hundred year flooding, and it called massive devastation,” she said to the camera.

“But you know, when things are going wrong and endorphins are low, this is the time you need to exercise.

“I really believe that fitness is everything.”

The video was before the horror floods claimed its 13th death in Queensland.

Swathes of Brisbane, Ipswich, Gympie, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast faced billions of dollars worth of damage after months worth of rain battered southeast Queensland last week, destroying homes and livelihoods.

Ms Russo spoke of her love for walking and exercising, and said the weather was no excuse to stop moving.

“The desire to get fit every morning, regardless whether it’s raining, whether it’s sunny, whether it’s too hot, whether it’s too cold, icy, snowy, whatever the weather is, if it is to be, it’s up to me,” she said.

“Your attitude determines your altitude. See you at the top.”
