Shock backflip revealed as LIV Golf close in on new deal

Golf Australia has signed a surprise offer with LIV Golf, as Greg Norman offers a financial commitment to Australia’s new junior development program.

LIV Golf was founded in 2021 with former professional golfer Norman appointed as CEO.

The league features some of the world’s best players including Aussie Cameron Smith, with the organisation spending billions of dollars in sign-on fees and prize money to attract players from the rival PGA Tour competitions.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported that anonymous sources that LIV and Smith’s Ripper GC franchise will make a financial commitment to Australia’s official junior development program My Golf – designed to introduce children to the sport.

Norman has previously taken aim at Australian authorities for rejecting discussions with LIV, however, a deal looks to be on the cards in South Australia.

An official announcement from the sporting body is expected in the coming days.

LIV’s second Australian tournament began in Adelaide on Friday and is projected to be viewed by over 80,000 fans.

The tournament, which is taking place at Grange Golf Club, will have an established area for children to learn how to play as the likes of Smith, John Rahm, and Brooks Koepka battle to take home a purse worth $6,230,000 AUD.

The prize money is the largest reward ever offered on Australian shores and will be a step forward in helping the sport grow across the nation.

Norman ruled out hosting a second LIV event each year in Australia earlier this week, despite the growing participation rates and popularity of the Adelaide tournament – which was named the world’s biggest golf event for 2023.

“I knew the value of Australia, what Australia can represent to the game of golf, and what Australia lacked,” Norman said.

“Basically, the fans spoke in droves last year. They continue to speak this year.”

LIV withdrew its long-standing application for the official world golf rankings to grant status to their tournaments last month.

The primary events of the PGA of Australia – the Australian PGA and the Australian Open – are both co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour, with local officials continuing to uphold their support and commitment to the traditional circuits.

LIV Golf, which is financially supported by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, is still working towards an agreement to end the sport’s civil war with the PGA Tour.

Lucas Herbert, the latest addition to Australia’s LIV defector list, revealed he has “no regrets” making the switch to join Smith earlier this year, claiming it is a “refreshing change.”

“I’m really loving the new schedule, the new tour, the new format and everything [that goes with it],” Herbert said.

“There’s definitely no regrets about joining. It’s a really exciting thing to be a part of.

“You watch from the sidelines, and it felt like the team aspect was a bit laughable really. You just didn’t think how these guys cared about the team.

“But it was amazing once I came over to experience how much guys do care about the team. It’s been really good to sit down on a Sunday night and think about that.

“It’s really unique to the product.”
