Who will be the first AFL player of the modern era to become a Hall of Fame Legend?

Matthew Lloyd, Corey Enright, Brent Harvey, Lenny Hayes, Chris Judd, Nigel Lappin, Andrew McLeod, Matthew Pavlich, Jonathan Brown, Jason Akermanis, Jimmy Bartel and Simon Black – which younger member of the Australian football Hall of Fame will one day be elevated to Legend status?

Under the rules of the Hall of Fame, only 10 per cent of the inductees are allowed to be elevated to Legend status, meaning numerous generational superstars will miss out.

2014 inductee Brad Johnson put the group to Gerard Healy and Kane Cornes on SEN’s Sportsday, asking of the younger members of the Hall of Fame, who could be next to Legend status?

“They played a lot of footy against each other, this group,” Johnson said.

“They’re probably the most recent to have been inducted into the Hall of Fame. It’s a big group.

“I’m talking in 15 years time – who from that group could be a Legend?

“Because of that group, there may only be one elevated to Legend status in say 15 years.”

Healy, who was inducted in 2000, believes Chris Judd stands out above the others Johnson named.

“I believe Chris Judd is only the third or fourth person that’s been elevated to the Australian sporting Hall of Fame,” said Healy.

“Whether or not that gives him higher credibility, another group of people have already assessed that of all the people who have played, Judd has taken that nod.

“From that group, I think Judd is maybe next cab off the rank.”

Johnson believes a Legend will certainly come from the group of Hall of Famers who played in the late 90s to early 2000s.

“Nathan Buckley, James Hird, Wayne Carey, Anthony Koutoufides, Michael Voss or Shane Crawford,” Johnson said.

“Of that group, there’s maybe one that gets elevated to Legend status – who is the one?”

Kane Cornes was quick with his answer.

Cornes: “Well, Carey.”

Johnson: “I think it’s Voss. Brownlow Medallist, premiership captain multiple times.”

Healy: “I think Carey and Voss will both be Legends.”

Johnson: “What about Buckley?”

Healy: “I’d be surprised if Buckley isn’t a Legend as well.”

Johnson: “But we don’t have the years, they can’t all be elevated.”

Cornes: “I could do this for hours. There’s no right or wrong answer. Are there any current players who could one day be a Legend? If Buckley is going in, then wouldn’t Scott Pendlebury as maybe the greatest ever Magpie?”

Johnson: “Sorry to jump in Kane, but then you’ve got the group in between with Gary Ablett and Lance Franklin.”

Cornes: “Dustin Martin, Max Gawn – if you’re in the conversation as the greatest ruckman of all-time you’ve got to be in consideration – you look at Patrick Dangerfield’s record, Pendlebury, Marcus Bontempelli as well, the current group is amazing as well.”

Gary Ablett Jr, who will be eligible for the Hall of Fame next year, looms as a likely Legend one day. Lance Franklin will become eligible for the Hall of Fame in 2028. Adam Goodes, who would certainly be in the conversation, declined his nominated to enter in 2021.
