Football Australia is deeply saddened to hear that Socceroo Cap #188 Alan Westwater, a distinguished former Socceroo, passed away suddenly on Thursday, 27 June, at his home in Denny, Stirlingshire, Scotland. Alan was 78 years old.

A celebrated midfielder, Alan’s contributions to the sport have left an enduring mark on Australian football. His exceptional skills and dedication are evident in his inclusion in Football Australia’s “Team of the Decade” for the period 1963-1970.

Born on 26 March, 1946 in Bridge of Allan, Scotland, Alan moved to Australia with his family in 1957. He quickly made his name on the local football scene, debuting in 1962 at just 16 years of age in the New South Wales State League as an active right midfielder with Canterbury Marrickville.

After making 14 appearances for the Sydney club, Alan returned to Scotland, where he played for Stirling Albion for three seasons. His performances were pivotal in helping the club achieve promotion to the Scottish top tier in 1965.

After three seasons in Scotland, Alan’s passion for Australian football brought him back to Sydney in 1966, where he joined Pan Hellenic. His composure in midfield and proactive approach in attack earned him a place in the Australian national team for the international series against Scotland in 1967. Alan was a pivotal member of the squad for the Vietnam tournament, where he scored his first national goal against Singapore in November 1967 and scored again ten days later.

That same year, Alan played in the Friendly Nations tournament in Vietnam, where Australia triumphed over Korea Republic in the final in Saigon. He also competed against the Indonesian, Singaporean, and Malaysian national teams.

Alan’s international career continued into 1968, with three more appearances for Australia against Japan. Over his international career, Alan earned 14 caps and scored 2 goals for Australia and retired from first-grade football after assisting Pan Hellenic to NSW State League runners-up honours in 1968.

Football Australia extends its deepest condolences to Alan’s family, friends, and his former football family colleagues at this time. Alan was not only a remarkable footballer but also a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered for his contributions to the sport and the memories he created.

Rest in peace, Alan Westwater. Your legacy will forever be cherished.
