About the National Film and Sound Archive 

The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA) is Australia’s audiovisual archive, telling the national story by collecting, preserving and sharing audiovisual media, the cultural experience platforms of our time. The collection itself dates back to 1935, making it one of the world’s oldest audiovisual collections. It is also one of the country’s most used cultural collections, with around 125 million views of collection content each year. The NFSA is in a period of significant change. Following increased Government investment, the institution is in a process of digital transformation, establishing the NFSA as Australia’s most dynamic and valued cultural organisation. We are rebuilding our curatorial workforce and developing the NFSA’s capacity to digitise our collection at scale – to preserve it for the future, to make sure it can be discovered, and to share it with all Australians.

We continue to work on developing a stable, secure and future-proof workforce across our four physical sites based in Canberra and Mitchell in the ACT as well as in Sydney and Melbourne.

We are also undergoing a program of business improvement for many of our corporate systems to improve efficiency and reduce manual handling.

About the Team

The Content and Interpretation team is part of the Curatorial and Accessioning Branch at NFSA. The team is responsible for delivering curatorial projects on-site at NFSA’s heritage building in Acton, Canberra and strategic editorial projects that communicate the NFSA’s purpose to collect, preserve and share, to tell the national story in all its diversity.

The Opportunity

We’re looking for a dynamic, experienced and motivated Curator with a deep interest in audiovisual culture who is driven to tell engaging stories to join our team.
As Curator, you will lead and support engaging curatorial projects, concepts, and profiling activities ranging from exhibitions, experiences, on-site activations, programs, and digital content creation across a range of platforms.

You will:

• Oversee a team of curators and creatives with day-to-day activities, ranging from collection acquisitions and handling, collection research and writing, coordination activities and digital content production to deliver projects in a timely manner.
• Be a creative curator and producer with experience in and a passion for Australia’s contemporary arts and culture across media, music, film and more.
• Be a collaborator who excels at managing relationships internally and externally.
• Have video production skills, project management experience, audiovisual archiving skills in the analogue and digital archiving space, and great admin and communication skills.
• Have a curious nature and have a proven track record in developing creative and engaging concepts to brief across platforms.

Job Description

Under limited direction, this position is responsible for delivering the following functions:

• Curate, develop, support and multi-task the delivery of NFSA led projects and ideas with creativity to tell the national story
• Drive and deliver engaging and dynamic content
• Oversee team activities and coordinate collection activities, including digital creative content for presentations, exhibitions and on-site programs
• Collaborate and liaise with artists and creatives, internal and external to NFSA to deliver creative vision
• Provide strong project management and administrative skills across databases, applications, and digital delivery platforms.

Desirable:

• A relevant tertiary degree and/or equivalent experience in a related cultural or industry environment.
