Day two at the 152nd Open Championship at Royal Troon was absolute carnage as vicious winds blew away plenty of the world’s best golfers.

The front nine at the Ayrshire course, which runs along the ocean, was dead into the wind and crushed the spirit of plenty playing in the final major of the year. Only 10 golfers were under par of the 80 who made the cut.

When the cut fell at six over, Troon had claimed plenty of high-profile victims including the reigning US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau (nine-over), 2016 British Open winner at this venue, Henrik Stenson (eight-over), 2022 Open champion Cameron Smith (12-over), 2014 victor Rory McIlroy (11-over), 2018 winner Francesco Molinari (nine-over), 2010 champ Louis Oosthuizen (eight-over), as well as three-time Open champion Tiger Woods (14-over).

Two of the most extreme casualties were Japan golfer Aguri Iwasaki, who shot a 20-over 91 for a 23-over total and he finished in last place.

It comes a day after Frenchman Romain Langasque withdrew after a brutal moment at the eighth hole in the opening round. In 25km/h winds at the 112-metre par 3 Postage Stamp, his first shot landed in fescue grass well short of the green. He skulled his next shot over the putting surface. Langasque took off his hat and said, “I’m done.” The Frenchman was four-over through eight holes, pointed to his seemingly injured back. It was only last week that Langasque finished third at the Scottish Open.

He later explained he’d, “Hurt my back on hole 4 and it became [worse and worse] after it … see you next year @TheOpen.”
