The Australian men’s basketball team, the Boomers, are about to embark on their 2024 Olympic campaign in Paris.
Captained by basketball great Patty Mills, the Boomers are playing in the hopes of topping their Tokyo 2020 result of a bronze medal.
The Boomers have a rich history when it comes to the Olympics, and the Australian national team has appeared at 15 games so far.
The Tokyo 2020 event marked their most successful campaign so far, and they finally won a medal after heartbreakingly finishing in fourth place four times.
And while they were rightfully stoked with their bronze medal win, this time they’re hoping to do even better and win that elusive gold medal.
The Boomers’ team list for the 2024 Olympic Games comprises 12 players and is as follows:
The Australian men’s basketball squad for the Olympics features a mix of fresh faces and legends.
Patty Mills and Joe Ingles will lead the pack, with both players heading to their fifth Olympics.
Mills believes the Boomers have what it takes to win gold this time around, and speaking on this year’s Olympic team, the captain said, “It’s clear to us that our goal is to be the team that’s standing on top of the podium, and for us to be unapologetic about that in our process.”
He added, “Our goal is to be able to be true to who we are as Aussies, that blue collar, most physical team. The mateship that we have, being the most connected team.”
The Boomers are currently ranked seventh in the world, and will appear in Group B at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
They’ll come up against Canada, Spain and Greece in the group stages.
Their first game is against Spain on Saturday 27 July at 7pm AEST, followed by a match against Canada at 9.30pm AEST on Tuesday 30 July.
The Boomers’ final group stage match will be on Friday 2 August at 9.30pm AEST against Greece.
