With golf about to officially tee off at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Australia’s eyes will be on the athletes wearing green and gold.
Four Australian golfers are set to make their mark at these Olympics, and they’ll be chasing our first ever medal in the sport.
Australia’s golf team is spearheaded by former PGA Championships winners Hannah Green and Jason Day, and also includes siblings Minjee Lee and Min Woo Lee.
Australia has never medalled at the Olympics in golf before, and our highest finish was fifth place – achieved by Hannah Green at the Tokyo 2020 games.
Green, 27, hails from Perth in Western Australia, and has had a stellar golf career over the past few years. She won the women’s PGA Championship in 2019, and in 2024 she’s already won two LPGA Tour events.
As aforementioned, Green has previously competed at the Olympics at the Tokyo 2020 games where she finished tied in fifth position, so she’s looking to go even further at Paris 2024.
Australia’s other female golfer is Minjee Lee who will be appearing at her third Olympic Games following Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.
Lee, 28, is also from Perth and will become the first Australian golfer to attend three Olympics.
As for the men, Jason Day will be making his Olympic debut at Paris 2024. He previously turned down the opportunity to appear at the Rio 2016 games – a decision he has admitted to regretting.
The 36-year-old has won 13 PGA Tour titles over the course of his career, including the 2015 PGA Championship. He was also formerly ranked number one in the world.
Day will be joined in the men’s competition by Minjee Lee’s younger brother, Min Woo Lee.
Lee, 26, is the reigning Australian PGA champion and he is currently in career-best form, achieving a world ranking of 31 in March 2024.
The Lees are set to become the first Australian siblings to participate in golf at the Olympics.
Golf was originally included in the Olympics at the 1900 and 1904 games, but the sport didn’t return again until it was reinstated at Rio 2016.
As for the schedule at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, golf will be taking place from 1 August to 10 August, and will start at 5.00pm AEST.
