The Australian women’s 3×3 basketball team will be in action at the Paris 2024 Olympics, starting July 31.
Anneli Maley will lead the four-member Gangurrus women’s team, also featuring Lauren Mansfield, Marena Whittle and Alex Wilson, in Paris. All four are set to make their Olympic debut.
This will be Australia’s maiden involvement in 3×3 basketball at the Olympics. The reigning women’s FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup champions secured a Paris 2024 quota by winning the FIBA 3×3 Universality Olympic Qualifying Tournament 2 in May.
The Australian men’s 3×3 basketball team, on the other hand, failed to qualify for Paris 2024.
The Gangurrus women have also bagged bronze medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and the 2023 FIBA 3×3 World Cup.
Eight teams, including hosts France, will compete in a round-robin format in the pool stage of the women’s 3×3 basketball tournament in Paris, starting July 30. Australia’s opening match will be against Canada in the wee hours of July 31.
The top two teams in the pool stage will advance to the semi-finals. Teams placed from third to sixth will contest the play-in matches, winners of which will make the semis. The medal matches are scheduled for August 6.
Compared to conventional basketball, the 3×3 version is played on one half of a basketball court where two teams of three players compete, attacking and defending the same hoop. The first team to 21 points or the team with the highest score at the end of 10 minutes is declared the winner.
At Tokyo 2020, 3×3 basketball made its entry into the Olympic programme. The sport was played in the 2010, 2014 and 2018 Youth Olympics before its Summer Games debut.
The USA clinched the women’s 3×3 basketball title at Tokyo 2020. Latvia, on the other hand, are the reigning champions in the men’s 3×3 basketball competition.
All matches of the women’s 3×3 basketball tournament at Paris 2024 will be played at the Place de la Concorde.
