Jimmy Bartel to step down as Giants footy director at end of season

Three-time premiership Cat Jimmy Bartel will reportedly step down from his role as footy director on the Giants board at the end of the 2024 season.

Nine’s Tom Morris first reported Bartel’s resignation, with the Geelong champion reportedly keen to explore other opportunities.

Bartel first joined the Giants board late in 2018 and was said to have played a key role in the cub’s list management calls and coaching decisions as well as the restructuring of its football department.

He was a member of the panel that installed Adam Kingsley as senior coach in 2022.

The 40-year old has continued to hold a variety of other business and media roles during his time at the Giants.

Bartel is regarded as one of the greatest players of the modern era including playing in Geelong’s trio of premierships from 2007 to 2011 – claiming Norm Smith Medal honours in the 2011 Grand Final win over Collingwood.

In 2023 he was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame, having also won a Brownlow Medal and two All-Australian blazers across his 305-game career from 2002 to 2016.
