The Australian Opals medal hunt is well and truly alive, after their convincing 70-65 victory over Canada in their second group stage match on Thursday.

And it was one crucial moment from Opal Cayla George, that summed up the whole match.

With just one second left on the clock in the second quarter, George nabbed the ball, after a quick attack from Sami Whitcomb saw her drive to the basket, before a huge pass out to George, on the three-point arc.

With just under two seconds left before half time, George stood tall and sparked the Opals with an insane three-point shot.

It handed Australia a seven-point lead heading into the main break, as they kept Canada at bay.

After the main break, it was all Australia’s way as they cleaned up their act.

The Opals were still sloppy handling the ball, but had cleaned up since their horror loss to Nigeria in their first match of the group stage.

It was Sami Whitcomb, who starred with 19 points, 10 assists and five rebounds, who was the crucial cog for the Opals.

Canada has now lost both of their group matches, first to France and now, to Australia.

The Opals are next in action on Monday morning.

They’ll face off against host nation France in their final group stage match at 5am (AEST).
