The Australian men’s basketball team is through to the quarter-finals of the Paris 2024 Olympics despite losing its final group match to Greece on Friday.
The Boomers lost to Greece 77-71 in the men’s Group A match at the Pierre Mauroy Stadium.
This meant that Australia, who won one match and lost two in their group, finished with four points. Canada and Spain were the other two teams in the group.
The Boomers had to wait for the final group match result between Canada and Spain to confirm their berth in the next stage. With Canada edging out the Spaniards 88-85, three teams finished with four points in Group A.
However, Australia finished second in the group due to point difference while Canada finished as Group A leaders.
At the end of the group phase the top two teams from each group and two best third-placed teams advance to the quarter-finals.
It is the fifth time Australia, the bronze medal winners from Tokyo 2020, made it to the quarter-finals at the Olympics basketball tournament.
The quarter-finals of the Paris 2024 Olympics men’s basketball competition will be held on August 6.
The Boomers’ opponents in the quarter-finals will be established on Saturday when the group stages conclude.
