A lingering thumb injury has knocked Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick out of the Olympics.

The International Golf Federation announced on Saturday that the 2022 U.S. Open champion had withdrawn with a right thumb strain. Fitzpatrick pulled out after persevering through a third round of 81 at Le Golf National to put him at five over. That effort came only a day after he fired a 64 on Friday. He opened with a 73.

Fitzpatrick, 29, was playing in his first Olympics. The World No. 22 has struggled since tying for fifth at the Memorial Tournament in June. He doesn’t have a result better than T-36 in his last four starts, tying for 64th in the U.S. Open and 50th in the Open Championship.

The WD comes two weeks before the start of the three-event FedEx Cup Playoffs. Fitzpatrick is 38th in FedEx Cup points, giving him a shot at making the top 30 who will compete in the season-ending Tour Championship.
