Australia and Greece are locked in a battle to progress to the quarter-finals after they both were outgunned by Canada and Spain respectively.

The Boomers lost 93-83 to Canada in a high-quality Olympic basketball contest while Greece fell to Spain 84-77 in a thrilling finish.

Australia played wonderfully in Lille on Tuesday to lead by four points at halftime, before Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, RJ Barrett (24 points, seven rebounds, five assists) and their NBA support cast overwhelmed them to seize control of their Olympics pool of death.

Gilgeous-Alexander was practically unstoppable for the World Cup bronze medallists, scoring 16 points in just 25 minutes on eight-of-10 shooting.

Josh Giddey had won the earlier exchanges (19 points, seven rebounds, six assists) before his former Oklahoma City teammate took control in the second half.

The Tokyo bronze medallists, who impressively beat Spain in their Games opener, will play the winless Greece on Friday.

For Greece, despite Giannis Antetokounmpo starring with 27 points and 11 rebounds, they fell to their second loss at the Games.

Spain played an incredible first half, powered by Sergio Llull’s three three-pointers to open up a 16-point lead at one point late in the second quarter.

However, Greece weren’t going away that easily, especially if Giannis had something so say about it.

His inside finishing, plus Vasilis Toliopoulos knocking down four three-pointers, brought the gap all the way back to 71-69, when Giannis powered in for a slam over Santi Aldama to tie the game with 4:30 left.

Greece had one last push after Kostas Papanikolaou and Giannis created a quick 6-1 run, but at 80-77 with 24 seconds to play, Giannis missed a three-pointer for the tie and Spain sealed the deal from the free throw line.

Now Greece and Australia will meet on Friday for their final matchup in the Olympics pool of death.

It’s must win for the Greeks, while a win for the Aussies would likely see them finish second and earn a ticket to Paris’s quarter-finals.

A loss would likely leave them among a pack of teams hoping to be there as one of the two best-performed, third-placed teams.

Greece would be among those if they are to emerge winners against the Aussies.
