PARADE College has gone one step closer to defending its Herald Sun Shield title after defeating Padua College in yesterday’s Division 1 senior boys semi-final. The Raiders stormed home with a wet sail at Trevor Barker Beach Oval, booting seven final quarter goals to win by 118 points, 20.18 (138) to 3.2 (20).

While scores flowed at Parade’s end, Padua’s tally remained fixed at 2.2 (14) from quarter time to over halfway through the final term. Dandenong Stingrays talent Harrison Doughton broke Parade’s streak of 14 goals, though it proved far too little and late for the Southern Independent Schools (SIS) outfit.

Angus Smith filled his boots with a game-high five majors for the victors, while Northern Knights trio Kristian Lawson (three goals), Jordyn Gillard and Riley Ormerod (both two) also hit the scoreboard. Parade was without top-age stars Tom Sims and Zak Johnson, who are expected to return for the final.

The result marked Padua’s first loss for the year, having gone through the SIS season undefeated at 5-0. Parade repeated its victory over the Mornington school from last year’s semi-final, which saw the Bundoora-based powerhouse get up by 63 points en route to claiming ultimate glory.

Parade will next take on Emmanuel College in the Herald Sun Shield Grand Final, after the Warrnambool school defeated Ballarat Grammar by two points in a thriller at DSV Stadium. Trailing by four points in the final minute, Charlie McKinnon proved the hero with a goal to send his team through to the decider.

The grand final takes place on Wednesday August 14 at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne, with the first bounce at 12:30pm. It follows the intermediate boys decider between Western Heights College and St Kevin’s (10:30am), who defeated St Patrick’s and Parade College in their respective semi-finals.
