The Fields are alive, set up Shield rematch

CAULFIELD Grammar will be hungry for revenge against Melbourne Grammar in next week’s Herald Sun Shield Division 1 Senior Grand Final. The Fields went down to a Sophie McKay-inspired Melbourne Grammar side last year, but have reached the decider again and will hope to turn the tables on the opposition in 2024.

Caulfield managed to get there thanks to a 29-point win over SEDA College Victoria, overcoming inaccuracy to post a 4.15 (39) to 1.4 (10) victory at Trevor Barker Oval on Tuesday. Despite the best work of star Eastern Ranges midfielder Jordyn Allen – who captained SEDA College – The Fields were able to boot the only four goals of the last three quarters, while restrict their opposition to just three behinds after Allen’s first term major.

While Allen was clearly the star for SEDA College, Oakleigh Chargers Under 16s talent Bailee Martin played up a year in order to steer her school to the win. Caulfield Grammer kicked seven straight behinds in the first quarter then six straight behinds in the third, though kicked a combined 4.2 in the second and fouth terms to secure the win.

Among the better players for The Fields were skipper Zoe Samuel and Willow Field, while Charlotte Dema also impressed. Some of the Coates Talent League aligned players included Chargers’ Chloe Potts and Sandringham Dragons’ Charley Ansell-Jones, the latter of whom was vice-captain of the team.

Reigning premiers Melbourne Girls Grammer wasted no time destroying Sacred Heart College to reach the final again, booting nine goals to one and keeping the Geelong-based side to just one goal for the game. In a one-sided match particularly in the third quarter – where Melbourne kicked four goals – Grammar got up, 9.8 (62) to 1.0 (6).

A host of Sandringham Dragons players feature in the win with Edie McLachlan – daughter of former AFL CEO Gil – kicking two goals, while Chloe Williams, Sienna Sharp and Macy Watkins were also among the winning side representatives.

It was an impressive victory considering Sacred Heart was captained by Geelong Falcons and Vic Country Under 18s skipper Mekah Morrissy, with a stack of Falcons running out for the school including twins, Ally and Meg Lappin, Kate O’Brien and Tara Trethowan.
