The Australian women’s basketball team will clash against Belgium in the bronze medal match of the Paris 2024 Olympics basketball tournament at the Bercy Arena on Sunday.
The Australia vs Belgium basketball bronze medal match at Paris 2024 will be broadcast live in Australia. The AUS vs BEL game is scheduled to start at 7:30 PM AEST on Sunday.
The Opals, third in basketball rankings, had a tricky outing in the semi-finals against the defending champions USA and lost 85-64.
“We just have to get our mindsets right,” Opals coach Sandy Brondello said. “OK, we lost the game, but we’ve still got (potential for) a podium finish. We want to try and get that bronze medal. That’s our goal, so we’re gonna fight.”
Earlier, the Opals’ Olympics campaign got off to a poor start in the tournament, losing their opening match to Nigeria 75-62. They turned things around with two consecutive victories, eventually finishing second in Group C.
“We learned a lot from the Nigerian loss (in group play),” Brondello reflected. “We can learn one from the USA. You know, what’s the next level? Where do we need to get to?
“Not being able to turn it over, being able to rebound, just (being) a little bit locked in when things don’t go our way, making sure we remain together.”
In the quarter-finals, Alanna Smith (22 points), Jade Melbourne (18 points) and Cayla George (18 points) fired the Opals to an impressive 85-67 win against Serbia.
Belgium, world No. 6, lost two of their three group stage matches, but sneaked into the knockout stages as one of the two best third-placed teams. After defeating Spain 79-66 in the quarter-finals, Belgium lost the semi-final to host nation France 81-75.
Australia and Belgium faced each other only once at the Olympics, in the group stages at Tokyo 2020. The Belgians won that match 85-70.
These teams also played each other in the quarter-finals of the FIBA Women’s World Cup 2022, where Australia came out on top 89-66.
The Opals have won six medals in Olympic basketball so far – three silver and three bronze medals. Their last podium finish was a bronze medal at London 2012.
Belgium, meanwhile, made their women’s basketball debut at the Olympics at Rio 2016 and are vying for their first-ever medal in this event.
Live streaming of the Opals vs Belgium Paris 2024 Olympics women’s basketball bronze medal match will be available on 9Now and Stan. The AUS vs BEL basketball will be broadcast live on the Network Nine TV channels in Australia.
