He has the ascendancy in this match against Russian Andrey Rublev, and commentators are gushing about his performance. They haven’t seen Popyrin play like this before. “Get to know his name; Alexei Popyrin”, they pronounce as he goes up 1-0.

It’s fair to say Popyrin’s talent has been obvious for sometime, but it’s the composure that’s most impressive about this performance so far against Rublev.

Popyrin looks calm and in control. He’s attacking when he needs to, and, so far, Rublev has no answers.
