Alexei Popyrin has become the first Australian to win a Masters 1000 event in over two decades after toppling Andrey Rublev in the final of the Canadian Open.
Popyrin, the world No.30, ousted the Russian 6-2, 6-4 in a commanding performance in Montreal.
Rublev, the current world No.6, is the fourth seeded opponent Popyrin ousted on the way to the title after previously beating Hubert Hurkacz, Grigor Dimitrov and Ben Shelton.
The 25-year-old is the first Australian to win an ATP Masters 1000 title since Lleyton Hewitt won the Indian Wells Open in March 2003.
Popyrin’s win means he will move up to No.23 on the ATP singles rankings and will be seeded at the upcoming US Open, which begins on August 19 in New York.
