The federal government has announced $12 million in funding, which it says will help the ten Jobs and Skills Councils (JSCs) study workforce challenges and identify industry-led responses, in consultation with Jobs and Skills Australia and vocational education and training (VET) industry stakeholders.

The announcement on Monday morning came at the beginning of National Skills Week 2024. According to a statement from federal skills minister Andrew Giles, to better respond to workforce challenges in VET across industries including manufacturing, aged care and construction.

JSCs are not-for-profit, industry-owned and industry-led companies, providing “leadership to address skills and workforce challenges for their industry.” 

“VET teachers, trainers and assessors play such an important role in ensuring Australia has the skills we need to thrive,” said Giles.

“VET is a game-changer for Australia – for young Aussies wanting to get ahead, and for unlocking future growth for businesses.”

Nine of ten jobs created require post-compulsory education qualifications, and nearly half of those are through VET.

The theme for 2024’s National Skills Week theme is “VET – It’s a Game Changer”, reflecting “the integral role that VET will play in Australia’s future”.
