Kyrgios confirms comeback after horror injury run

Kyrgios confirms comeback after horror injury run

Nick Kyrgios will make his return to the court from injury in an exhibition mixed doubles event with Naomi Osaka ahead of the US Open.

The 29-year-old has not played competitively since going down in Stuttgart in June 2023. That was his first match since being injured in November the year before.

There has been some doubt about his return to the sport as Kyrgios embarked on media duties the past six months or so, with knee and wrist injuries keeping him off the court.

Kyrgios is set to feature in the US Open’s Mixed Madness charity event on Wednesday, partnering Osaka against the likes of Aryna Sabalenka and Taylor Fritz, Coco Gauff and Ben Shelton, along with Paula Badosa and Stefanos Tsitsipas.

He will back up within days from one exhibition event with Osaka to another to play against Casper Ruud in the Ultimate Tennis Showdown in New York, adding weight to claims he is on the mend.

“Hey guys, it’s NK here,” he said on social media.

“I just want to inform everyone that keeps up with the UTS or any tennis fan out there that I will be competing on the 22nd of August at the Forest Hill Stadium in New York.

“I know it’s been a long time but my body is finally ready to get back out there and have some fun.

“I will see if I’m still able to go up against some of the best players in the world starting off with my old rival Casper Ruud.

“Casper, please take it easy on me.

“I can’t wait to be out there again competing in front of all the amazing fans and hopefully I can still bring some life to the sport.”

Kyrgios will ease himself back into the action with friendly conditions such as 40-minute matches divided into quarters.

Final entries for the US Open grand slam event won’t be revealed until Thursday, but it is not expected Kyrgios will be part of the field.
