Huge Aussie blow as back surgery ends Green’s summer

Australian all-rounder Cameron Green will miss the entire summer as he opts to undergo surgery in a bid to manage lower back issues.

Green will have the surgery in New Zealand and will miss the entire five Test home series against India as a result, with his recovery expected to take about six months.

The 25-year-old’s absence places yet another cloud of uncertainty over the Australian team, with selectors also facing headaches over the make-up of the top order.

Green has battled stress fractures in his back throughout his career but has not had issues with the injury since 2019.

The bowler complained of discomfort after a one-dayer against England last month, and was diagnosed with a stress fracture after scans in London.

Following lengthy conversations with Cricket Australia medical staff, Green’s surgery was confirmed.

“Whilst spine stress fractures are not unusual in pace bowlers, Cam has a unique defect in an adjacent area to the fracture that is believed to be contributing to the injury,” a Cricket Australia spokesperson said.

“After thorough consultation it was determined Cameron would benefit from surgery to stabilise the defect and reduce the risk of future recurrence.

“The surgery has been performed successfully with elite pace bowlers in the past. Recovery time is anticipated to be around six months.

“The decision to proceed to surgery with Cameron’s long-term future as an all-rounder in mind.”

Had Green elected against going under the knife, he would have been available for selection for white ball squads to play Pakistan for three ODIs and three T20s in Australia next month. The first of those games will be played on November 3, wrapping up on November 18, with Australia’s Test series against India to start on November 22.
