Steve Smith will move back to the middle-order for Australia’s Test series against India.

The 35-year-old spent time opening the batting following the retirement of David Warner and produced mixed results in clashes with West Indies and New Zealand.

But with an injury to Cameron Green, who had been in the No.4 role last summer, Smith will now make the switch back to his favoured position.

Speaking to media on Monday afternoon, national selector George Bailey revealed Smith had “expressed a desire” to give up on the opening experiment.

“Pat [Cummins], Andrew [McDonald] and Steve Smith had been having ongoing conversations, separate to the untimely injury to Cameron,” he said.

“Steve had expressed a desire to move back down from that opening position, and Pat and Andrew have confirmed that he will be dropping back down the order.”

The decision from Smith will leave Usman Khawaja in need of a new partner for the five-game showdown with India kicking off next month.

Cameron Bancroft, Matthew Renshaw and Marcus Harris are among the names who could fill the now-vacant spot, with the latter scoring a Sheffield Shield ton last week.

But the name on everyone’s lips right now is teenage sensation Sam Konstas, who belted back-to-back centuries against South Australia in just his fifth Shield appearance.

“He’s in the mix, as are plenty of others,” Bailey said of the 19-year-old.

Konstas, along with fellow uncapped hopefuls Beau Webster and Nathan McSweeney, have been selected in the Australia A squad for warm-up games against India A.
