Italian jockey Andrea Atzeni will fly into Melbourne later this week to take the reins of Zardozi in Saturday’s $5 million Caulfield Cup.

Head trainer James Cummings of Godolphin Australia believes the combination of Atzeni’s skills and Zardozi’s strong form over 2400 metres could deliver success.

“Number one, he can comfortably ride the weight,” Cummings said, highlighting Atzeni’s ability to manage Zardozi’s 51kg in the race.

The mare, who won the VRC Oaks and placed in the ATC Oaks and Group 1 Metropolitan, remains unpenalised after her narrow Metropolitan defeat, keeping her well-positioned for the Caulfield Cup.

Cummings, who has faced bad luck with previous contenders like Hartnell and Avilius, hopes Zardozi’s combination of form and Atzeni’s ride will break the streak. “I’m due a change of luck,” Cummings remarked.

Zardozi is currently fourth in betting for the 2024 Caulfield Cup at $9 with betting apps, as final acceptances approach.
