Some of the biggest names in tennis will compete at this year’s Brisbane International, but the status of Nick Kyrgios remains up in the air.

Aryna Sabalenka – who took out last year’s Australian Open – has been announced for the women’s draw at the event, with world No.4 Jessica Pegula also slated to compete.

In a statement on Wednesday afternoon, Sabalenka said she was hoping to improve on her result last year when she lost to Elena Rybakina in the Brisbane final.

“I’m really looking forward to returning to Brisbane again,” she said.

“I had a great time this year and enjoyed playing in front of the Queensland crowds. Hopefully I can go one better in 2025.”

On the men’s side of the draw, Holger Rune and Frances Tiafoe have both been confirmed, but the door has been left open for Kyrgios to compete.

Tournament director Cam Pearson has said the option is there for the 29-year-old to feature as he prepares to return from injury this summer.

“We’d love to have Nick here in Brisbane – our 2017 champion does so much on and off the court for tennis and he’s a real fan favourite,” he told The Sydney Morning Herald.

“He enjoys playing out here, he would be someone who, if he wants to play the first week of the year, we would welcome him to Brisbane with open arms.

“We’re always hunting for the best players in the world to be here. The fans demand to have the best in the world here and we’ve got another month or so until entries close.”

Kyrgios hasn’t played for the past two years due to a myriad of injuries, but with a grand slam still high on his bucket list, an appearance in Brisbane could the perfect way to get him back in form in time for the Australian Open.

The former Wimbledon finalist is planning on making his long-awaited comeback at December’s World Tennis League in Abu Dhabi.
