Mastering the art of chipping can be the key to lowering your scores and elevating your short game. Few players showcase this skill better than Min Woo Lee, known for his finesse and accuracy around the greens. In this guide, we’ll break down Lee’s technique and offer practical tips to help you hole chip shots with the same precision and confidence. Whether you’re looking to save par or shave strokes off your game, following Lee’s approach can give you the edge to turn tricky shots into scoring opportunities.
One of the key fundamentals for Lee is that he has a bit of a closed stance [above left], so his right shoulder can stay high and more on top of the ball [above right]. Secondly, he has a narrow stance which allows him to stay centred and keep his weight more on his left side.
The most important thing Lee does well when he hits this shot is he keeps the clubface very square to the target line through impact [above left. His arms are soft so they can pull up into his body [above middle] after impact. This action keeps the club from rotating too much, and it becomes like a bit of a hinge softening the strike [above right] on the way through impact, not allowing the clubface to close.
So it’s basically a little bit of a closed stance, weight slightly left and very narrow stance, keep the clubface square allowing your soft arms to come up into your body slightly after impact. Give this a try and I think it’ll help you chip a lot better around the greens and maybe hole out a few more shots like Min Woo Lee, whom I’m told has nicknamed himself “Dr Chipinski”.
