Less than a day after losing a coveted Melbourne Cup ride, Jamie Kah has secured the mount on Okita Soushi for the iconic Flemington handicap.
Kah’s manager, Lachie Weekley, confirmed that the 28-year-old will partner the Ciaron Maher-trained stayer, who impressed with a hard-fought victory in Friday night’s Group 2 Moonee Valley Gold Cup (2500m).
The Galileo-sired runner is currently carrying 50kg for the Melbourne Cup, though his win at The Valley could see him incur a weight penalty. Okita Soushi is currently listed as a $21 chance with betting sites to win the Cup.
Kah was initially slated to ride Point King, winner of the Group 3 Archer Stakes, but the horse was withdrawn from the Melbourne Cup on Saturday by trainers Anthony and Sam Freedman. Kah had also been considered for South Australian stayer The Map, but those connections ultimately secured Rachel King after Kah was still tied to Point King at the time.
