Martin takes MCG detour from Coldplay World Tour

The start of the summer of cricket has been boosted by some star power with Coldplay frontman Chris Martin watching on as Australia takes on Pakistan in their first ODI.

Martin is currently touring the east coast as part of Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres World Tour and was spotted in the stands overlooking the MCG.

It came less than 24 hours after he fell through the stage at his band’s concert at Marvel Stadium on Sunday night but fortunately avoided injury after he was caught by a stagehand.

Remarkably Coldplay’s Chris Martin now has more appearances at the MCG than former New Zealand great fast bowler Chris Martin who never played a match at the home of cricket.

Martin is no plastic fan when it comes to cricket having shared a long friendship with legend Shane Warne and has been paying tribute to the King of Spin at his concerts in Australia.

On Wednesday he dedicated the song Sparks, with lyrics including “I promise you this, I’ll always look out for you,” to the late cricket legend.

“Let’s play this for Shane and his family,” Martin said during an acoustic set near the end of the show.

“Our brother, we miss you. Every time we come to Melbourne, it used to be fun to hang out with Shane and all the Warne family.”

“I don’t want to talk about it too much or I’ll start to cry.”
