In a Melbourne Cup boilover, Knight’s Choice, trained by Shiela Laxon and John Symons, clinched victory in a thrilling photo finish, edging out Japanese contender Warp Speed at long odds.
This victory cements Laxon’s place in history as the first female trainer to win two Melbourne Cups, her first triumph coming with Ethereal in 2001.
Winning jockey Robbie Dolan was visibly emotional, struggling to find words to describe his disbelief and joy.
“I can’t believe it… This is the biggest race in the world, and to win it is amazing. He just proved everybody wrong,” Dolan said, overwhelmed by the moment.
Co-trainer John Symons praised Dolan’s ride, emphasizing their quiet confidence.
“We wouldn’t be here if we didn’t think we could have won. What a ride by Robbie. What a thrill,” Symons remarked.
Laxon echoed the sentiment, commending Dolan’s instincts, noting, “We didn’t give him instructions. He just knew what to do.”
The favourite, Buckaroo, and import Vauban finished unplaced, while Jamie Kah rode Okita Soushi into third place.
