Ponting, JL could be dragged away from commentary box

Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer may have to skip some of their Perth Test commentary duties due to a conflict of commitments which could also lure Daniel Vettori, an assistant coach with the Australian side, away from Optus Stadium, in another indication of India’s immense power in the cricket world.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, Ponting, Langer and Vettori will likely be in Saudi Arabia for this month’s Indian Premier League auction, which is scheduled to take place from November 24-25 and will therefore clash with days three and four of the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series.

Ponting and Langer are not only expert commentators with Channel Seven, but the head coaches of the Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants respectively.

Vettori is the head coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad.

If the IPL drags away Ponting, Langer and Vettori from the Perth Test, it will not only underline India’s administrative dominance of world cricket but the increasing pulling power of domestic Twenty20 tournaments.

Ponting has established himself as perhaps Australia’s most respected cricket voice since retiring from the international game in 2012, with his insights on field placements, bowling changes and other aspects of cricket, repeatedly wowing audiences.

Ponting and Langer are both greats of Australian cricket, while Langer’s credibility as a commentator is also enhanced by the fact he coached many of the current Australian players during his time as head coach.

Vettori, a great of New Zealand cricket, joined the Cricket Australia coaching set-up in 2022, and has since helped guide Australia to World Test Championship glory, 50-over World Cup glory and a retention of the Ashes.
