Skipper in doubt for ODI series as WBBL season cut short

Alyssa Healy has been ruled out of the WBBL season and remains under an injury cloud for Australia’s upcoming ODI series against India.

The Australian captain was placed in doubt after suffering a knee injury which has withdrawn her participation with the Sydney Sixers.

Healy, already managing a foot injury suffered during the T20 World Cup, is undergoing rehabilitation for the injuries according to the Sixers.

The setback raises concerns over Healy’s availability for the three-game series against India, with the team also scheduled to travel to New Zealand for an additional series.

Should she be ruled out of the series, it is likely Tahlia McGrath, who led the team at the T20 World Cup, will take over her leadership duties.

It is understood that the 34-year-old will undergoing assessments over the next two weeks to decide her availability.

The injury is not believed to impact her availability for the multi-format Ashes series which is set to begin on January 12 in North Sydney.

Healy had issued a warning ahead of her WBBL return that her foot injury may still require medical management.

“There are higher powers sitting above that are quite vocal in what can and can’t happen, which I completely understand,” she said in early November.

“I want to be available for as much of the summer as I can.

“I’ve hardly played a game for the Sixers in the past two seasons… I want to be available but the reality is that might not be the case.

“How I pull up from games is going to be really important.”
