The Brisbane Bullets will be sweating on the availability of Josh Bannan, after the 23-year-old looked to injure his ankle in the Australian Boomers’ win over Thailand.
Bannan landed awkwardly after going up for a defensive rebound during the second quarter, and didn’t return to the court.
He’d impressed up until that stage, scoring seven points in just four minutes of action.
“I haven’t had a chance to talk with the docs and physios just yet. I don’t think it’s too bad, but we get up and travel pretty early tomorrow, so we took the precaution and ruled him out of this one,” Boomers coach Jacob Chance said.
The Australian team was challenged early, with a parochial home crowd giving Thailand the edge and a two-point lead at quarter-time.
But a Chris Goulding shooting masterclass turned the tide.
The Melbourne United star finished up with 9-of-14 from the three-point line and 27 points for the night.
The Boomers outscored their opponent 81-26 after quarter-time, to record a 53-point win – 101-48.
All but two players on Australia’s squad sit on NBL rosters, with youngsters Ben Henshall, Rocco Zikarsky and Lachlan Olbrich all playing key roles.
But it did take time for the Boomers’ young group to find their groove.
“Often times when you have a lot of guys that are new into international basketball or haven’t played a lot of international basketball recently, the few first minutes can be a little jittery,” Goulding said post-game.
“We found that a little bit offensively and defensively, so I just wanted to be confident and come in and show that we’re the champions of Asia for a reason.
“Once we realised that and lifted our defensive intensity, it ignited our offence. Everyone settled down, calmed down a little bit and played some Boomers basketball.”
Australia sits top of Group A with three wins from as many games, and will take on Korea on Sunday at 5pm AEDT, live on ESPN.
