Smylie, a 22-year-old from the Gold Coast, spent time with the Australian major leader in 2019 as a Cameron Smith Scholarship recipient.

Now he is looking to deny the 2022 British Open champion and hometown hero his first victory of 2024.

While Smith and Smylie are co-leaders entering the final day’s action at 10-under, fellow Australian Marc Leishman is one shot behind while Victorian duo Todd Sinnott and David Micheluzzi sit in a tie for fourth at eight-under.

Sinnott has already teed off for the day and has opened with five birdies to start the third and final round at five-under.

Smith, Smylie and Leishman are all scheduled to tee off at 12pm AEDT, with Micheluzzi shortly before at 11.49am.

Jason Day is three shots back from the lead while Min Woo Lee is at six-under entering the final day.

But all eyes will be on Smith, who is looking to become just the fifth golfer in the history of the Australian PGA to win it at least four times.

“It’d be nice, this is kind of my home event,” Smith said.

“I have a lot of good family and friends cheering me on. But you still have to go out and do it and I’m looking forward to tomorrow.”
