The annual tour match in the nation’s capital will act as a game where India’s touring party — as well as Australian quick Scott Boland — can maintain match-day form, given the now 10-day break between the first and second Test.
Boland, who is a part of Australia’s 13-man squad to play in Adelaide starting December 6, could well be joined out in the middle by rival spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja who missed out on selection in Perth.
Speaking on Fox Cricket’s The Follow-On podcast, Indian journalist and commentator Harsha Bhogle previewed what India’s two main goals for the match would likely be; one of which revolved around getting their captain Rohit Sharma into form after the birth of his second child back home in India.
“Objective number two will be to get the back-up selectors to tell the selectors: ‘I should be playing’ – and maybe a long bowl for Ashwin.”
The 38-year-old played in all three Tests against New Zealand, to which India suffered a record-breaking 3-nil whitewash loss to the touring Kiwis.
With 536 Test wickets under his belt and a wealth of experience, Ashwin will be pushing as much as anyone to put his name forward for the Adelaide Test given his solid record at the Oval (16 wickets @ 30.44 from three matches).
As for another veteran Indian bowler, Bhogle was not as certain about a Mohammed Shami appearance against the PM’s XI.
“I don’t know what the situation is with Mohammed Shami, I don’t think he’ll be arriving in time for that.”
Australia’s squad will feature some familiar rising stars like Sam Konstas, Ollie Davies and Jayden Goodwin — but will also unearth some fresher faces, like fast bowling all-rounder Hanno Jacobs.
The South-Australian born 23-year-old has been representing the ACT Comets in the state second XI competition for four seasons now, after moving to Canberra to study at ANU.
The Sturt-turned-Western Suburbs product had a particularly big performance for NSW’s 2nd XI earlier this season, taking 5/55 and a match-winning 54 not out against Victoria alongside the likes of Daniel Hughes and Kurtis Patterson,
Young guns Charlie Anderson, Jem Ryan, Aidan O’Connor and Mahli Beardman are among the other players set to be part of Australia’s next generation of stars.
The PM’s XI v India two-day match will begin at 2:40pm AEST on Saturday at Manuka Oval.
