Lyon reveals brutal ‘old’ sledge from Indian young gun

Being Australia’s best ever off-spinner doesn’t earn you immunity from ageist sledges from young whippersnappers, according to Nathan Lyon.

Lyon – who turned 37 last month – on radio revealed a somewhat backhanded jibe directed at him by gun Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal during the first Test in Perth.

After making a duck in the first innings, Jaiswal announced himself to Australian fans with a sensational 161 in the second dig.

He even engaged in a bit of a verbal stoush with Mitchell Starc, telling the left-armer the ball was “coming too slow” during the Perth fixture.

Speaking on SEN 1170’s The Run Home with Joel and Fletch, Lyon revealed he was also in Jaiswal’s crosshairs during that second innings when he made a dig about his age.

Lyon said Jaiswal quipped: “You’re a legend, but you’re old.”

“(I said) Appreciate that, mate, but I don’t feel that old,” Lyon replied.

With 532 wickets from 130 appearances to his name, Lyon has taken the most wickets of any Australian off-spinner in Test history.

Lyon missed out in the first innings at Optus Stadium as the Aussie quicks ran riot, but took 2-96 from a mammoth 39 overs in the second.

The pink-ball second Test begins in Adelaide on Friday.
