It’s Tiger Woods’ event but Tiger Woods isn’t playing.
Still the game’s biggest draw, Woods said earlier this week that, because of a previous back surgery, he just isn’t in physically good enough shape to play and walk 72 holes this week at his Hero World Challenge at Albany Golf Club in the Bahamas. But a group of 20 of Woods’ buddies are here, topped by World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, and they’re all playing for $5 million with the winner taking home $1 million. In all, nine of the top 20 players in the world are in the field.
After some time to rest Scheffler is looking to end his 2024 campaign with another win, after capturing eight on the year, which included the Olympic gold medal in Paris, the Masters and the Players. It’s the first time he’s played since the Presidents Cup. Justin Thomas is playing for the first time as a father. Keegan Bradley, the 2025 U.S. Ryder Cup captain, is here for the seventh time.
Nick Dunlap, Sahith Theegala, Russell Henley, Aaron Rai, Matthieu Pavon, Akshay Bhatia, Robert MacIntyre and Ludvig Aberg are all playing here for the first time.
