‘He’s got leadership DNA’: Two hours that proved Aussie youngster is Test quality — LIVE

At the close, the hosts were 86-1 with Nathan McSweeney not out 38 from 97 balls and Marnus Labuschagne on 20 after the visitors were dismissed on the cusp of tea after winning the toss and opting to bat.

A menacing Starc was India’s chief destroyer.

He gave the hosts a dream start in removing Yashasvi Jaiswal with the first ball of the match and ended with 6-48 – his best Test figures.

In reply, Australia weathered 10 overs of the pink ball at dusk before Jasprit Bumrah’s persistence paid off, finding extra movement and with it a thick edge from Khawaja (13) that carried to Rohit Sharma at slip.

TALKING POINTS: Clear Marnus change flips script; Starc ‘love affair’ reaches new heights

AUS v India – 2nd Test, Day 1 Highlights | 08:18

McSweeney took 17 balls to get off the mark and had a life on three when dropped by wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant.

But he made the most of his fortune, showing maturity in his second Test, while Labuschagne survived a nervy start as he targets a big score after a lean spell.

“They were 33 of the toughest overs you’re going to get in Test cricket,” former Australian spinner Kerry O’Keeffe said on Fox Cricket’s Test Match Daily before Day 2.

“Pink ball under lights. I thought they (McSweeney and Labuschagne) were fantastic … this guy (McSweeney) is a gun, he’s got leadership DNA in him.

“If he can get 100 today there may be a long-term future for N. McSweeney. He let the ball go as did Marnus … I thought it was fabulous, low percentage error rate batting from the two Australians.”

India came into the clash riding high after a 295-run victory at the first Test in Perth, but Australia have a formidable record in Adelaide, winning all seven pink-ball Tests they have played at the venue.

While Australia is in a strong position for now, O’Keeffe warned that Ravichandran Ashwin could be the “danger” man for India when action gets back underway on Saturday.

“I thought his over last night showed he could be a threat,” O’Keeffe said.

KATICH TEES OFF AT SLOW OVER RATE

One of the biggest talking points to come out of the opening day’s action at Adelaide was the slower over rate, with former Australian opener Simon Katich particularly vocal on the issue.

Speaking on SEN Radio earlier during the day around the 22nd over, Katich called it “ridiculous” as the hosts ended up bowling 44.1 overs.

“This will be the 22nd over bowled in nearly two hours of cricket,” Katich said.

“I know there has been wickets, but that’s a disgrace. That’s ridiculous.”

As for how to incentivise teams to speed up their over rates, Katich suggested one way to keep captains like Pat Cummins accountable.

“Captains are responsible, we know they are, because they’re the ones that are copping fines,” Katich said.

“But we know the fines aren’t working because it hasn’t changed anything. Potentially it’s going to be suspensions for Test matches.

“And if it’s the very next Test, you’re losing your skipper and that’s maybe how tough it has to be to get this up to scratch because it’s not good enough.”
