Global warning for Jewish people against travel to Australia

One of the world’s most prominent Jewish human rights organisations is preparing to issue a global warning against travel to Australia following an arson terror attack on a synagogue.

The Simon Wiesenthal Centre in the US is known for it’s Jewish human rights activism, holocaust research, nazi war criminal hunting and tolerance education.

Following the arson terror attack on the Adass Israel Synagogue at Ripponlea in Melbourne, the organisation reached out to community members through social media saying: “Arsonists burned a Melbourne synagogue, built by Holocaust survivors, injuring Jews and damaging sacred religious items.”

“Jews were trapped inside a Sydney synagogue by Hamas supporters, and a Jewish bakery in Melbourne was targeted by antisemites,” the organisation added referencing other events that occurred within days of the Melbourne terror attack.

“These attacks coincide with Australia’s vote at the UN supporting an anti-Israel resolution calling for Israel to leave parts of Jerusalem and the West Bank — an action that would leave the Jewish state with indefensible borders.”

The organisation called on Australian authorities to hold perpetrators accountable, ensure the safety of the Jewish community and take stronger measures against harassment and anti-Semitism.

Now, after the arson attack was eventually declared a likely terror attack by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, the group will warn Jewish people across the world against travel to Australia.

“I will be sending a letter to the Australian ambassador to the United States informing him that we are going to place a travel advisory on Australia for Jews around the world,” Rabbi Abraham Cooper told The Age.

“My hope is this will be a short-lived initiative but we will want to know specifically what is being done to ensure the integrity of the Jewish community and most importantly, to hold perpetrators culpable for their actions.

“I do this with a heavy heart but we are not convinced that the authorities in Australia are prepared to take the necessary steps to reassure the Jewish community there.”

Mr Albanese has been widely criticised by politicians and community members at the speed of his response to the now-terror attack.

In the wake of the attack, the Coalition have ramped up their attack on the Prime Minister for being “weak on anti-Semitism” since October 7, 2023, which they said led to Friday’s attack. Part of the problem, they say, is that the Prime Minister has been unable to refer to the rise in anti-Semitism without mentioning Islamophobia.

Pictures have also emerged of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese playing tennis in one of Perth’s ritziest suburbs, as Australia’s Jewish community was dealing with the fallout from the firebombing of a Melbourne synagogue the day before.

The Australian published the images of Mr Albanese in tennis whites and shorts playing in the sun at Cottesloe Tennis Club on Saturday afternoon.

The Prime Minister’s game came despite the attack and commentary from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu blaming the Albanese Labor government for increased anti-Semitism in Australia.

The Simon Wiesenthal Centre has not yet formally shared it’s travel advisory.
