When Charley Hudak was hired by Sun Day Red to design Tiger Woods’ new golf shoe, there was an important swing thought he had to keep in mind.
“One of Tiger’s most important requests was that the shoe features a sleek 6mm heel to toe drop, allowing the golfer to leverage the power of ground force, while not sacrificing support,” Sun Day Red’s website explains.
With the launch of Tiger: The Pioneer Cypress, Hudak—who had previously designed Rickie Fowler’s shoe at Puma and another Puma shoe that Charlie Woods had been seen playing in—accomplished the goal while also creating a classic-looking golf shoe that focuses on support and traction.
That support can be found throughout the shoe, from its V-shaped opening to create a snug and supportive fit, to the EVA foam midsole that offers flexible while also being durable. It all creates a combination of comfort and stability.
Seemingly there isn’t a situation on the course that these shoes can’t handle: On the outsole, there are nine cleats to provide grip for every type of lie, and in inclement weather. If you do find yourself playing in the rain, you don’t have to worry about your feet getting wet: The full-grain-leather upper is waterproof.
The shoes are delivered with two sets of footbeds, each with different characteristics. One footbed is smooth while the other features ridges that massage your feet as you walk.
The Pioneer Cypress is available in three standard colorways, white, black and gray. For a limited time, a white version with a red sole is available as well as a black version with a red sole.
The shoes are available online on sundayred.com for $250, with the limited-edition shoes being sold at $275.
