Gael Monfils provides latest update on Elina Svitolina’s fitness ahead of the Australian Open

Gael Monfils issued a key update on the return of former top 10 player Elina Svitolina.

The 30-year-old, who is married to the Frenchman, has been out of action since the summer after undergoing foot surgery.

At her best Svitolina was one of the most consistent players on the WTA Tour, but injury derailed her quest to get back into the top 20 before the end of the 2024 season.

But after rehab and getting back on the practice court, Svitolina will soon be ready to compete again and the new season is just around the corner.

When is Elina Svitolina set to return?

Since the start of the 2022 season Elina Svitlolina has been limited to just 85 matches.

This is not only due to Svitolina’s injury but also taking time off to give birth to her daughter Skai in October of that year.

She was having a steady 2024 campaign until she required surgery, but now the Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist is aiming to return to tennis at the start of next season, according to Gael Monfils.

“She is back on court. She feels good,” Monfils told the Tennis Weekly Podcast. “Of course, she is aiming to start the regular season in January.”

When was Elina Svitolina’s last match?

Svitolina last competed at the 2022 US Open in August. She reached the third round where she was beaten by Coco Gauff, who was trying to defend the title she had won the previous year.

The Ukrainian started well by taking the first set, but Gauff showed her fighting qualities and came back to win 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Approximately three weeks after her US Open exit, Svitolina announced her season was over as he would be having surgery.

“So unfortunately my 2024 season is now in the history books, as I have had surgery on my foot to correct a long standing issue that I have been trying to manage throughout this year,” Elina Svitolina wrote on Instagram.

“I am excited for the opportunity to focus on my recovery and come back even stronger than before. I am determined to do whatever it takes to get back on the court and compete at the highest level.”

Now Svitolina will look to get some matches under her belt ahead of the Australian Open, an event where she has reached the quarter-finals on two occasions.
