Peter Dutton has defended his plan to build seven nuclear reactors across Australia after the CSIRO doubled down on its estimate it would cost twice as much as renewable energy.
The opposition leader spoke to Sunrise just now where he was asked given the report’s findings, he was rethinking the plan.
Dutton stood by his plan. He said it would be cheaper than renewables.
“We will release our costings this week. When you think of how much money the government is spending on the renewables-only policy, it’s cheaper than what the government is providing at the moment,” he says.
Fresh crackdown on Facebook, Google for payment of news content
A new scheme to get Facebook and Google to pay for Australian news content will be announced later today.
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has warned it would no longer pay for news after a deal signed under a Morrison-government era code expired earlier this year.
The 2021 news media bargaining code contained the power to force tech giants to deal with media outlets or face fines. Meta and Google struck agreements with companies. While Google renewed the deals, Meta declined. Instead, it’s threated to just take news off its platforms as it has in Canada.
So far, the Labor has been reluctant to confirm details about how its new crackdown would work. But it has been speculated the government will opt not to use Morrison-era code.
Why? Because it would not apply if a platform removed news from its site.
