Tim Henman names his favourites to win the 2025 Australian Open

Tim Henman has revealed his favourites to win both the men’s and women’s titles at the 2025 Australian Open.

Aryna Sabalenka and Jannik Sinner are the respective WTA and ATP world No 1s after the duo each won the Australian Open and US Open titles in 2024.

Sinner won his maiden major in Melbourne last year, while Sabalenka is a two-time reigning Australian Open champion.

On the men’s side, world No 3 and four-time Grand Slam winner Carlos Alcaraz can become the youngest man to complete the career Grand Slam if he triumphs Down Under.

World No 2 Alexander Zverev is seeking his first major, while seventh-ranked Novak Djokovic has secured a record 10 Australian Open crowns.

On the women’s side, world No 2 and five-time major champion Iga Swiatek will aim to win her maiden Australian Open title. Coco Gauff, Jasmine Paolini, Zheng Qinwen and Elena Rybakina are some of the other strongest candidates for the trophy.

2025 WTA season: Where will Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff and Emma Raducanu start the new campaign?

In an interview with Sky Sports, Henman gave his verdict on the leading contenders to win the year’s first major, which will run from January 12-26.

“I probably will go on form. I think on the women’s side, I think Sabalenka was rightly the player of 2024. She played so well on hard courts and has such a big game,” the former world No 4 said.

“I think she has got rid of some of the serving issues on second serve, so I think she is definitely the player to beat.

“In the men’s, Alcaraz and Sinner are the favourites but Djokovic has won 10 down there, he knows what it takes. With [Andy] Murray in his corner it will be interesting to see how he fares.”

Henman, a six-time Grand Slam semi-finalist, also discussed world No 15 Jack Draper, who suffered an injury setback during his off-season training.

“Yeah, I mean it’s always frustrating when you get those little niggles or injuries, but you know, at times, it goes with the territory,” he said.

“It’s most important that he gets back 100% fit and healthy so that when he gets into the tournament play — which obviously starts so early in the season —  he’s gonna be ready and raring to go.

“And he’s got a lot to build on from 2024 going into 2025.”

The former British No 1 continued: “Yeah, very [optimistic]. When you actually go into the detail of Jack’s 2024, it still wasn’t straightforward.

“He still had some injury issues. And to finish in the top 20 and make semis of the US Open, that’s gonna be big for his confidence.

“He’s won on tour now at 250 and 500 level, so onwards and upwards, but you gotta make sure that you manage the schedule, manage the body to give yourself the best opportunity of competing against the other best players in the world.”
