Josh Hazlewood looks set to re-take his place in the Australian XI for the third Test against India, after a solid bowling session off his full run-up in Brisbane on Thursday.
But in somewhat bizarre scenes, Hazlewood had earlier been whisked away from the main training group in a black van, sparking fears he was in a race to prove his fitness.
As media and fans waited for Hazlewood to bowl at the Gabba, he instead emerged with pads on to have a bat.

Later, before rolling the arm over, cameras captured him and fellow fast bowler Mitchell Starc climbing into a black van in the carpark with bowling coach Daniel Vettori.
Their destination was Allan Border Field some 7km away on the other side of the Brisbane CBD. Sitting in the front seat, Starc pulled his hat over his face – as if to protect his identity – as the van pulled out of the carpark.
The Sydney Morning Herald reports the last minute switch was due late-arising availability of the Allan Border Field, which allowed Hazlewood to bowl off his full run.
In the India camp, fears around Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness have been allayed after he, too, completed a full training session.
Bumrah battled cramps in Adelaide, before former India coach Ravi Shastri speculated he might have been nursing a groin injury.
His place in the side would be a huge boost to the Indians off the back of the 10-wicket thrashing in the pink ball Test.
In the three-and-a-bit Australian innings so far this series, Bumrah has dismissed six of Australia’s seven top-order batters, with Mitchell Marsh the only exception.
“It’s coming,” Marsh joked with media on Thursday.
“We know right now he’s probably the best bowler in the world. This is about getting yourself up for that challenge. It’s international cricket. It’s a big series and I think you want to take the best in the world on.”
Marsh said he was able to laugh about his first-innings dismissal in Adelaide, in which he was dismissed caught behind despite replays showing he didn’t hit it.
“The reality is I thought I hit it and I didn’t. I didn’t speak to Heady (down the other end),” he said.
“I had a ‘mare … I got in the change rooms and Gazza (Nathan Lyon) asked if I hit it and I said I smashed it.
“Then the replay went up and the head went into the hands. One minute later everyone was laughing at me. My bad.”
The third Test begins Saturday.
