Thanasi Kokkinakis comments on if he will play doubles with Nick Kyrgios at the Australian Open.
After not playing a competitive match since June 2023, Kyrgios’ injury nightmare now seems to be behind him.
The 29-year-old suffered serious wrist injury which required surgery and he also experienced problems with his knee.
But after a long hard road to recovery, Kyrgios is now back to full fitness and is now set to resume his career on home soil.
Nick Kyrgios announced he will play at the Brisbane International before competing at the Australian Open for the first time since 2022.
He plans to play singles but Thanasi Kokkinakis, who he won the doubles titles with at Melbourne Park, has responded to calls asking for the pair to team up again.
As much as he loves the idea, a doubles reunion seems more likely than unlikely for Kokkinakis and Kyrgios at this juncture.
“Doubles is a tricky one, because everyone loved it last time, we loved it, it was so much fun,” Kokkinakis told 7News Melbourne.
“It’s definitely not going to be the priority for us. We feel like we owe it to people to get back out there and have some fun.
“It’s not something we’ve practised, but yeah, singles is definitely the goal. It’s a tricky one. If you have a big five-setter, with all due respect, the last thing you want to do is go out and play doubles the next day, but we’ll play it by ear and see how it goes.”
Kokkinakis and Kyrgios’ quest for doubles glory at the 2022 Australian Open with a 6-4, 6-2 win over their compatriots Alex Bolt and James McCabe.
In round two, the Aussies produced some inspired tennis to defeat the top seeds Nikola Mektić and Mate Pavić in straight sets.
They need a pair of three-set matches to progress through rounds three and four, before taking on the third seeded pair of Horacio Zeballos and Marcel Granollers in the semi-finals.
Kokkinakis and Kyrgios sealed a 7-6, 6-4 win and reached the final of their home Grand Slam where they faced another all-Australian duo in Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell.
The Rod LAver Arena erupted with delight when Kokkinakis and Kyrgios’ magical doubles campaign ended with victory after a 7-5, 6-4 win declared them champions.
“I have won some big titles around the world, played some amazing matches. This one ranks (number) one for me,” an elated Kyrgios said post-match.
“When I say I wouldn’t want to do it with anybody else, I mean it. It was just special. The whole week, winning each round, I didn’t take it for granted. I was soaking it in.
“I’m just super proud of myself. I don’t really care too much after I lost to (Daniil) Medvedev (in singles), but doing it with ‘Kokk’ is insane.”
