The nine players receiving wildcards for the 2025 Australian Open have been confirmed including three time Grand Slam winner

The 2025 Australian Open is on the horizon and fans are eager to see who will hit the ground running at the start of next year.

The tennis season always starts with a bang with the first Grand Slam of the season taking place in January.

Each player is desperate to be at the Australian Open battling out in one of the most iconic tennis arenas for one of its most prestigious trophies.

Some players are unable to gain direct entry into the main draw, but several players have been offered another way to compete in the tournament that does not include going through the qualifying rounds.

Which players were given wildcards at the 2025 Australian Open?

Before Grand Slams in particular, one of things fans look forward to is seeing which players received wildcards for the event.

They are usually reserved for players with a strong history at the event who perhaps are not ranked high enough to enter the main draw directly, or giving players an opportunity to compete at home.

Fans will not have to wait any longer as the Australian Open’s website revealed the first nine players who have been awarded wildcards for the 2025 tournament with more set to be announced in due course.

Among the names is Stan Wawrinka, a former champion at Melbourne Park, and he is joined by eight other Australian players.

Another of those players is Ajla Tomljanovic, a three-time Grand Salam quarter-finalist who is the final opponent of Serena Williams’ illustrious career.

Stan Wawrinka to compete at 2025 Australian Open 11 years after winning the title

Wawrinka will aim to win a second Australian Open title when he takes to the court in 2025. He won the title for the first time in 2014, which was the first Grand Slam triumph of the Swiss player’s career.

Wawrinka began his title-winning campaign by defeating Andrey Golubev, who retired from the match in the second set.

The 39-year-old needed four sets to get past Colombia’s Alejandro Falla, before reaching the fourth round without having to play after Vasek Pospisil pulled out.

After overcoming Spain’s Tommy Robredo in round three, Wawrinka took on Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals, who defeated him in five sets in 2013.

Wawrinka gained some revenge by beating the Serbian in another five-set epic, and reached his first Grand Slam final after defeating Tomas Berdych.

Standing between Wawrinka and the title was World number one Rafael Nadal, who was aiming for his second title at Melbourne Park. But it was Wawrinka who overcame the Spaniard, who was struggling with injury to join the elite club of tennis Grand Slam winners.
