Starc defends the first.
FOUR! Then he goes bang, swinging hard at a length ball and cannoning it over wide long on for a boundary.
Starc defends, the ball just floating back a little bit and interesting Bumrah momentarily, but it was too far away from him.
SWING AND A MISS! A short ball, Starc went after it, missed it, and Pant leaps high to take it one-handed.
Starc fends to point – no run.
Gotta be thinking of a declaration soon if Australia wants any hope of a result apart from a draw (given the weather).
– Doc
No sign of it yet.
And, realistically, I don’t think this Australia team are the sort to really force a game like that to be honest.
Carey gets off strike by clipping off his pads for a single to fine leg.
Starc, upright, defends back to Jadeja.
Same again from Starc – this game of throw downs continuing between the pair of them for another couple of balls.
SIX! NOT ANYMORE! Starc has seen enough scores his first runs of the day with a slog sweep over midwicket for six.
He tries again but only manages a single out to one of the two fielders out there.
And Starc punches him back down the ground, only a hand from Bumrah stops that from being runs.
Starc leaves the next on length.
Two slips and a gully, much too short from Bumrah who does force Starc into taking some evasive action, leaning back as the ball flies past his face.
Starc, forced to play a shot at last, defends back down the pitch.
Another delivery flies over the stumps from Bumrah. Starc leaves it.
He’s faced 11 balls so far this morning without scoring, Starc. But he’s left really well.
Solid defence from Starc, who plays the ball back to Bumrah, who in turn rolls the ball to Starc’s stumps, he flicks the ball up with his boot and rolls it back to Bumrah. Neat.
It’s come from just 53 balls, a very impressive lower order innnings from Carey.
Jadeja is handed responsibility at the other end and starts by bowling down the leg side to Carey.
Carey clips off his pads to deep square leg and takes an easy two.
BIG APPEAL! Carey brought out the reverse sweep and gets hit on the pads but there is no decision forthcoming from the umpire.
FOUR! Great attempted dive from Gill at fine leg – but he can’t stop Carey sweeping for four!
Two slips and a gully, Starc on strike and he fends the first to mid on for no run.
Rohit Sharma’s field positions have been criticised but this seems pretty orthodox to be honest as Starc lets one fly over the stumps.
Another shorter ball is left on length by Starc.
Starc drives positively to mid off for no run.
Bumrah not quite on the money yet, Starc will be happy to leave those all day as another flies over the stumps.
He leaves the last one too. Not a great over from Bumrah to start.
Let’s play some cricket, shall we?
ALex Carey resumes on 45, Mitchell Starc on 7.
Is it raining in sunny Brisbane?
– Peter
But let’s not count our chickens – there’s plenty of drizzle about.
Ask again in maybe half an hour.
But good news!
Cricket will get underway at 9:55am.
Anyone watching the BBL opener last night would have been shocked to see Hilton Cartwright stretchered off after sliding to field a ball on the boundary at Perth Stadium.
The Stars allrounder spent the night in hospital in Perth and underwent scans that cleared him of serious injury, the Melbourne Stars said this morning.
You can read more about Hilton, here.
But they’re keeping the covers off for now.
Cool.
There’s a lot to be said about going back to basics.
Steve Smith had seemingly tried everything to rediscover his blistering best form.
It turns out, a shift back to what made him the batting behemoth he was earlier in his career was all it took.
Read Dean Bilton’s analysis here.
Of course, we may not be getting underway at that time, given the groundstaff are still hovering nervously around the covers, which a laying in wait next to the pitch.
So we’ll see.
But in the meantime, we’ve got plenty for you to read about.
In somewhat better news though, the covers are currently off and the players are back out there warming up.
That’s the good news.
Here’s what the radar is looking like.
Scattered showers will prevail, I fear. Let’s hope we get plenty of play between those clouds.
I’m sure we’ll be sent a barrage of comments of the like – “It’s not raining in insert my local town/city here>“.
Which is lovely, if for no other reason than for us to be vicariously warmed by the rays beating down on your abode.
But it is raining in plenty of other places where cricket is taking place at the moment.
Including New Zealand:
And Hobart.
And I think you’ll agree, if it’s raining in those places then nowhere is safe.
Hello and welcome to the Gabba, where we hope to have some action from the third day of the third Test between India and Australia coming up for you at some point.
Unfortunately, it might not be a full, un-interrupted day like we had yesterday.
The wind has come in and there are squally showers drifting across Brisbane and appear set to do so all day.
When I arrived at the ground the covers were on (and I was wet after walking from the bus stop), soon after the sun was out and the players were on the field warming up. Now, the covers are back on and the rain is hammering down.
That’s all taken place over the last half hour.
A portent of a frustrating day to come?
Let’s see, shall we?
Regardless, myself and Jon Healy will do our best to entertain you, while hopefully describing plenty of action as well.
