Jannik Sinner won the Australian Open in 2024, and quickly established himself as the best player in the world, building up a significant lead as world number one.

The Italian then won the US Open in September, as well as three Masters 1000 titles, the ATP Finals, and the Davis Cup.

Similarly, Carlos Alcaraz won the French Open, and Wimbledon, as he continued to wow fans with his remarkable talent.

On the other hand, legendary star Novak Djokovic failed to win an ATP title this year, falling to number seven in the rankings.

He’ll be hoping to bounce back in the new year, and another legend has just tipped him to do so.

John McEnroe hopes Novak Djokovic wins the 2025 Australian Open

Speaking on the Served with Andy Roddick podcast, former world number one John McEnroe revealed who he wants to win next year’s Australian Open.

“I am hopeful, in a way, that [Novak] Djokovic wins it,” he said.

“It would give [Andy] Murray a little bit, he needs some more positive vibes.

“He certainly knows Novak, and they will train exceptionally hard.”

Andy Murray is set to coach Novak Djokovic in 2025, a big move for the Serb in the search for a record-extending 25th Grand Slam title.

McEnroe went on to tell fans what Djokovic’s recent appointment of Murray reminded him of.

“Novak is always a step ahead of everyone, coming up with these crazy ideas,” he said.

“But then you are like wait a minute.

“I remember when Murray had Ivan Lendl coach him and someone said to me in Australia ‘Did you hear Murray is going to be coached by Lendl’ and I went ‘Oh my God, I cannot believe he hired Lendl’.

“Then I was like it was going to work. And it did.”

The American believes Murray will be a real asset to Djokovic’s team in Australia.

“He brings the amount of knowledge, this guy is a tennis geek and he loves it,” said McEnroe.

“He will leave no stone unturned for Novak, just the way he did for himself.

“This guy gave 120%, he gave it everything he had.

“Just think of the pressure he had when he won Wimbledon.”

Where would an 11th Australian Open title see Novak Djokovic rank amongst the greats?

Djokovic has won ten Australian Open titles, a remarkable record that sees him well clear of any of his competitors.

Rival Roger Federer picked up six wins in Melbourne, but the Serb has him covered following his retirement in 2022.

But how does Djokovic’s dominance in Australia compare to his rivals at their best Grand Slam tournaments?

Only Rafael Nadal’s Roland Garros exploits can best Djokovic’s efforts in Melbourne, but he would close the gap to just three with a win in the new year.

A title would come 17 years after the 37-year-olds first victory down under when he took down Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in 2008.

Djokovic will have to fend off the likes of Sinner and Alcaraz next month if he wants to take one step closer to Nadal’s record of Slam titles at a singular event, but with Murray by his side, he’ll no doubt be confident of doing so.

Djokovic’s bid for an 11th Australian Open title begins on January 12.
