Tributes are pouring for an Australian resident who died in Thailand with his body reportedly found on the steps of a 7-Eleven earlier this week.

Christopher Stephen Boucher, a British national who had been living and working in Sydney, attended a Full Moon Party on the island of Koh Phangan on Sunday before he was found deceased at the convenience store at 6.30am local time on Monday.

Boucher, 37, lived in Sydney’s Northern Beaches where he was understood to have run his own cleaning business. Originally from Kent in England’s southeast, Boucher was on his way home from the party on Sunday when he reportedly visited an ATM to withdraw money to pay a local who had taken him back to his hotel, according to reports in local media. It’s not known what occurred after that.

Police question witnesses as loved ones remember ‘beautiful’ man

Local police say they are now questioning the individual who offered him the ride.

“Officers are checking CCTV to find out who took the tourist back and why they left,” Koh Phangan Police’s Lieutenant Colonel Arun Kamlangkeo said, The Mirror reported.

Detectives and paramedics had arrived at the 7-Eleven at about 7.20am, but Boucher was unable to be saved. “Officers are currently questioning witnesses who claimed to have seen him drunk at Hat Rin Beach where the party was held,” Lieutenant Colonel Arun said. “After the party, he tried to find a car to return to his accommodation, but he had no cash.

“He couldn’t pay the fare, but he met a local and asked to be taken to his hotel. He promised to pay after withdrawing money. The local agreed and dropped him off at the hotel. He was said to have been visibly exhausted before he died.”

Arun theorised he “might have partied all night” until the morning and “passed out due to lack of sleep”. “We are questioning the person who gave him a ride home. We are also reviewing security camera footage,” the Lieutenant Colonel told media.

Parents share ‘devastation’ over loss of son

Boucher’s heartbroken parents shared their “devastation” at the loss of their “beloved son”. “Christopher was a wonderful, kind, thoughtful person who was loved by all those that knew him,” they said in a statement to news.com.au.

“He had so many close friends who were like family to him. Our grief for the loss of our son is tempered by the outpouring of love and affection for him from all those that knew him in Australia and the United Kingdom. Our world has changed forever, but we will cherish our wonderful memories of Christopher.”

Boucher’s housemate also described him as a “beautiful” man to the publication.

The Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan is an all-night beach event held during each full moon, drawing thousands of backpackers. Known for its wild reputation, it features cheap drinks, cannabis, and a range of drugs like magic mushrooms, kratom, methamphetamine, and LSD.

It’s been reported there were no immediate signs of physical assault when Boucher’s body was found.
