South Australia’s job market is outshining the rest of the nation, with recent data indicating an impressive surge in job vacancies. According to the latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), the state saw an 18 percent spike in job vacancies over the three months to November, which is 13 percentage points higher than the nearly 5 percent national average.
This current total of 23,000 job vacancies in the region stands over 50 percent above the decade average, positioning South Australia as a leading state for employment opportunities. Notably, the majority of these vacancies, amounting to over 20,000 or 88 percent, are within the private sector.
Despite a 4.3 percent decrease in job vacancies nationally over the past year due to economic challenges, South Australia’s job market has shown remarkable resilience compared to other states. This robust performance has earned the state top rankings in business and economic reports. The Business Council of Australia has ranked South Australia as the best place in the country to do business in its Regulation Rumble report. SA also ranked highly in CommSec’s State of the States report, consistently listed as the top-performing economy for three quarters in 2024 and only trailing behind Western Australia in the latest evaluation.
Treasurer Stephen Mullighan commented on these developments, saying “These promising figures once again demonstrate there are plenty of jobs available for South Australians looking to get into the workforce.” He also noted the growth momentum of the state’s job market even as the broader national economy experiences a slowdown.
Mullighan said “The Malinauskas Labor Government is focused on increasing the number of highly-skilled, highly-paid jobs through investment in skills and training for major industries such as defence.” This focus is expected to further enhance the employment landscape of South Australia, providing additional high-quality job opportunities for its residents.
